Open letter to President Lukashenko

Open letter

to Belarus President

Alexander Lukashenko

Mr. President Lukashenko,

Surely you understand already that your rule in our country ends soon. During this time we urge you not to make further mistakes, but try to correct what you have committed already. After years of hesitation from one direction to the opposite, outright robbery and violence, lies and insults, you need to finally make the single most important step in your life - step towards goodness and truth, mercy and love, towards your own heart and soul and your human spirit, earnestly apologize to everyone who lived, lives and will live on the Belarusian land, for the insult to the memory of ancestors, for the spoiled life of contemporaries, and for the unlucky legacy, which  you leave to descendants.

Now you are loosing your last chance not only to save your reputation, but also to gain recognition as a person, equal with others, those who have the right to determine the life and fate of nations. And do not talk about provocation, because you have personally given the order for this brutal violence. The tail should not wrap the dog, and having so many tails is even more harmful and dangerous.

Now you can be saved only by the Belarusian people, whom you have despised all the time, people who have faith, which you do not understand, and the immortal spirit, who are capable of creating, storing and multiplying their achievements. We have made our choice and we accept the responsibility for it. It's our choice, which you trampled into the bloody snow, but still could not destroy, and even strengthen.

You must ask for excuse from those who are now thrown into prison to the abuse and torture, and only then people will also forgive your sins and endless mistakes. It is hard and difficult, and you have not much time for it, but you need to decide now, there is no another chance. You're not afraid only of the dead, but it is most difficult to obtain forgiveness from them.

We are not saying for whom we voted in the election, so you must realize that all of our candidates are equally worthy and deserve equal respect, and of course everyone should be free. You have only one week to do it. From the start of next year the days start to count down, and within a year we will no longer hear your false television congratulations.

You already finished your only decent mission - you have convinced everyone that such dirt should never climb up to the top again, so now you can say goodbye and leave, saving your still remaining advantages.

In just 270 days new Russian pipelines will come into production, and your last allies will leave you. But the world will never forgive your beastly violence, as well as arms and drug trafficking that brings death and suffering to many innocent people.

Do not lose your last chance.

No respect anymore, so let's just say goodbye,

The people of Belarus.

Belarus post-election follow-up

First of all, thank you very much to everyone who sent contacts, information, and reached out to the ICRC on their own.

I was able to get the word out to the UN and the ICRC. They said they would look into the matter but cannot guarantee anything. And I'm starting to get a feeling nothing will be done until after Christmas.

I also spoke to staffers on the US Senate foreign policy committee - right now they can only monitor the situation because the Congress is going on recess by evening of December 23 and will return only on January 3 and it will be already 112th Congress. So the only hope is on US Department of State and we are working that angle.

The word in the street (http://www.facebook.com/l/ea831lw5wN__N1ANN1Q-DZjd3fw;euobserver.com/9/31558) is that EU's foreign policy office is not going to do much with regards to Belarus. If you are a citizen of an EU country, try to contact your EU Parliament representative & the foreign policy commission.

Andrei Sannikov's lawyer met with him on December 22 and said that his condition was bad. Sannikov had many bruises and some leg injury but had not been taken to a doctor.

Anatoly Lebedko & Nikolai Statkevich are on a hunger strike (word from lawyers). Lebedko is drinking sweet tea. Statkevich's relatives tried to send him drinking water but the KGB refused it.

No word about Vladimir Niekliayev's condition. The KGB refused to arrange a meeting between him & his lawyer justifying the decision with the lack of meeting space.

The police is yet to provide the locations of all detainees. There are rumors that because of the overcrowded prisons some where taken to Hrodna (Grodno), which is ~200km West of Minsk, and to Homiel (Gomel), which is ~300km South-East of Minsk.

Minister of Internal Affairs announced on Wednesday that the police was identifying all persons present at the protest and would be taking action against all of them. They are using photo & video materials as well as call logs from mobile providers. Human rights defenders are expecting the total number of the repressed to be close to 3,000 people (the official count of participants).

There are also reports of universities expelling students who are currently in detention. Fortunately, the government of Poland already expressed willingness to accept them in Polish universities for continued education.

Finally, there is at least one PayPal account setup for those abroad wishing to send money for supplies & fines. If you are interested, let me know and I'll find out more details.

Open Letter by 9 European civil and human rights organisations

In deep concern about the human rights situation in Belarus
Open Letter by 9 European civil and human rights organisations
To the Belarusian Authorities
and to the Governments of all EU Member States
We, civil and human rights organisations of several European countries, jointly express our deepest
concerns about the mass detentions and serious human rights violations in Belarus.
On the 19th of December up to 40,000 people took part in a demonstration in Minsk, which was brutally
dispersed by riot police.
The presidential candidates Vladimir Neklyaev, Andrei Sannikov, Vital Rymasheuski, Mikalai Statkevich,
Grigory Kostusev were beaten up and detained afterwards.
During the last days more than 600 people have reportedly been detained, among them two other
presidential candidates, Ales Mіhalevіch and Dzmіtry Us, the chairman of the Belarusian Helsinki
Committee Aleh Hulak, the chairman of United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedka and the leader of Young Front
Zmitser Dashkevich.
We urge the Belarusian Authorities to;
- release all political prisoners in Belarus immediately and unconditionally
- ensure the right to freedom of expression and assembly to all people in Belarus
- end the persecution, harassment and intimidation of dissidents
- bring to law those responsible for the beatings of peaceful demonstrators
We call upon the Governments of all EU Member States to;
- stand up for human rights in Belarus, a country in the heart of Europe
- announce immediately a travel ban to high officials from Belarus, responsible for the human rights
violations mentioned above, including President Lukashenka
- support all people in Belarus who are fighting peacefully for democracy, freedom and human rights
We call upon everybody to sign the Petition on www.belarus-petition.org to demand the respect of
fundamental human rights in Belarus.
We express our full solidarity with all people and organisations in Belarus who are suffering due to the
tyranny of Europe's last dictatorship. This Christmas and New Year's holidays we will be thinking of all
political prisoners and their families in Belarus. To all those who are engaged in the Belarusian civil society
we can only say: we will not forget you, please do not give up, we will stand by you.

Police brutality is common and widespread.

Another case of brutality made public, where two teenagers were tortured during 10 months each and then justified during 7-months trial.
